Colombia

30 April 2010, Mompos: The only tourist in Mompos

Mompos, ColombiaNow, I am the only Tourist in Mompós, a friendly, sleepy town on an island on the Magdalena river, which thrived during colonial times as it was the main resting port for ships travelling up the Magdalena from Cartagena to Honda. It has beautiful colonial architecture, many plazas and narrow streets along the river.

20 April 2010, Jardín: Café y arquitectura

Jardin, AntioquiaI already saw a fair bit of Colombia. From Popayan I travelled furhter north to Cali, Salento, Medellin and Antioquia. So far Antioqia is my favourite region of Colombia. There you find Jardín, a small village located in the southernmost part of Antioquia. Unlike many other hamlets in the country, Jardín has remained largely unchanged since established 140 years ago. Less than 20,000 people inhabit Jardín. In the past most dedicated their lives to grow coffee, plantains (like bananas), beans and sugarcane. Today many will be glad to show you their town and surroundings. Characteristic for Jardín and Antioquia is a main plaza with big trees, many cafeterias and a church. A cup of coffee, a "tinto" costs only P 500 (0.25 USD / 0.20 EUR).

15 April 2010, Popayan: Travelling Colombia

Popayan, ColombiaI arrived in Colombia, the last country of my South America overland trip. I have already visited the beautiful Laguna de la Cocha, the carved stone statues of San Agustin and the pre-colombian tombs of Tierradentro. The first bigger city in Colombia that I visited was Popayan, a beautiful colonial city with white washed buildings, lots of museums and even more churches.

Now I am in Cali for a couple of nights. From here I will slowly travel North toward the Caribbean coast from where I will take a sailing boat to Panama.
